The Shawnee County Department of Corrections (DOC) in Kansas is committed to facilitating the successful reintegration of inmates into society through a variety of educational and rehabilitative programs. These initiatives are designed to equip incarcerated individuals with the necessary skills and knowledge to lead productive lives post-release.
Educational Opportunities
Recognizing the pivotal role of education in reducing recidivism, the DOC has partnered with local educational institutions to provide inmates with access to academic programs. Notably, the Inside Out Prison Exchange Program, in collaboration with Washburn University, offers a unique classroom experience where inmates and university students learn together within the correctional facility. This program fosters mutual understanding and provides inmates with valuable educational experiences.
Re-Entry and Work Programs
To prepare inmates for successful re-entry into the community, the DOC offers a structured Re-Entry Program. This program focuses on developing employment skills, providing training, and offering on-site work opportunities. By engaging in meaningful work assignments that mirror a typical workday, inmates cultivate desirable work habits and skills essential for securing employment upon release.
Behavioral and Life Skills Classes
Understanding the importance of addressing behavioral health and life skills, the DOC provides structured behavior modification classes. These programs encompass behavioral health education, life skills development, and faith-based initiatives, all aimed at promoting personal growth and responsible decision-making among inmates.
Technological Education for Incarcerated Women
In partnership with the Center for Digital Inclusion (CDI), the DOC offers technology education programs specifically tailored for incarcerated women. Since 2019, CDI has served over 1,000 women across multiple correctional facilities, including Shawnee County. These programs aim to bridge the digital divide by equipping participants with essential technological skills, thereby enhancing their employment prospects upon release.
